About
Nilyufer Hamid-Turksoy (Bulgaria, 30 August 1978) is a PhD candidate at the Department of Sociology at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR). She received her BA and MA in the field of Communication and Media Studies. In 2006, Nilyufer received a grand from the British Council to participate in Contemporary European Studies program at the European Research Institute of Birmingham University. In 2008, she received a grand from the European Commission to participate as a visiting researcher in Amsterdam School of Communication Research at Amsterdam University. Upon completion of her one-year stay, she continued her research by transferring to the Sociology Department of EUR to undertake a PhD in the field of sociology of media.
Nilyufer currently works on her dissertation about Turkey’s image in the foreign press. She combines her interests in modern Turkey and the representation of contemporary Turkey’s image in the British press. Nilyufer apply a 'critical discourse analysis' method of Teun van Dijk and looks how political and popular discourses are articulated and socially constructed by the British journalists and/or commentators.
